New 7/24/09 Which version of the
Bible should I use? See
video (1 minute 22 seconds) Why are
there different versions? The Bible is a collection of
books written by dozens of authors over a period of 1600 years. Most of
those books were originally written in Hebrew; some were written in
Greek. Centuries later, the manuscripts were translated into English.
Since the English language has changed over the years, since the Bible
is such an important book, and since no translation conveys 100% of the
original (though they are close), several translations or versions have
been made. Some are created for the purpose of readability. Some are
created for the purpose of word-for-word accuracy. Some are created to
capture the dynamic flavor of the original.
Here are some of my favorites: The Message
- This is a great reading Bible, my top recommendation for beginners.
It might not be the most accurate, but it does a wonderful job of
making the Bible come alive.
King James Version
(KJV) - If you want to study an accurate translation that has stood the
test of time, this is your top pick. Many simply wouldn't read any
other. However, keep in mind that 1611 English is quite different than
what we speak today, otherwise you might not know that "suffer" means
"permit," "charity" means "love," and so on.
New International Version
(NIV) - This is another great reading Bible. I listen an audio version
of this every day. I wouldn't stake my entire theology on one NIV
verse, but it's a solid translation for everyday use.
New American Standard
(NASB) - Here's another very strong study Bible, a word for word
accurate translation with language more up to date than the King James.
Its much less readable than the NIV or The Messsage, however.
Amplified Bible
- If you're studying a single verse and want to get the most out of
every word, then this is a good resource. Keep in mind that the
"amplifications" weren't found in the original language, but they are
the translator's best guess as to what the original was hinting at.
Other versions. There are many. I'm even working
on one myself. My friend Russell Stendal created a powerful
and extremely accurate translation in his Jubilee Bible, which, sadly,
is currently out of print.* Most are good, some are bad. Bible Gateway is a tremendous online resource
containing the entire text of the Bible online in searchable form. It
contains several versions, so you can compare any given passage in a
variety of versions.
*If you want to contribute funds to reprint
the Jubilee Bible, send your contribution to Pan-America Mission, Inc.,
PO Box 429, Newberg, OR 97132-0429 USA and includ anote saying this is
for reprinting the English version of the Jubilee Bible.
Comments
I'm surprised that you have left off the list of good translations the
New Living
Translation (NLT) by Tyndale. It is my favorite. I love its style and
readability and how it brings out the meaning in such an understandable
way. Forrest Zander
